Modernity 現代性

最近都在讀有關 modernity．不論是馬國明有關城市景觀的課，還是主科 Visual Culture theory 的課，都跟 modernity 有關係。

Modernity (現代性) 從來不是一樣簡單的東西，它跟現代化 (Modernization)不同。現代化指的大概是一個社會的城市化和工業化的過程。Modernity 指的，卻更為複雜。

從Wikipedia 看到了 Anthony Giddens 有關 modernity 的簡短定義，(節錄自 Wikipedia,  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modernity)

"...a shorthand term for modern society, or industrial civilization. Portrayed in more detail, it is associated with (1) a certain set of attitudes towards the world, the idea of the world as open to transformation, by human intervention; (2) a complex of economic institutions, especially industrial production and a market economy; (3) a certain range of political institutions, including the nation-state and mass democracy. Largely as a result of these characteristics, modernity is vastly more dynamic than any previous type of social order. It is a society—more technically, a complex of institutions—which, unlike any preceding culture, lives in the future, rather than the past (Giddens 1998, 94)."

其 中，(1) 所說的，是有關一個社會對於世界的看法以及態度能否開放地改變，而改變的源頭是來自人的。和我之前在某次的討論中，所提到的，modernity 就是一種有關我們如何去看待 tradition 以及我們如何 react to it 有點相似。在我看來，現代性一定得和傳統某程度上對立，否則我們根本不能比較出來。而這裡所說的傳統，並不是意指我們一定得對抗一切具有傳統的事物，如廟 會／粵劇／宗教儀式等等；傳統在這裡有著更形而上的定義：它是一種思考的模式，一種世界觀，一種無形的但又影響著人的東西。

傳統的思考模式，不論是東西方，也強調某程度的服從，這一種服從是沒有經過思考的，而在權力關係上，服從者往往是處於弱勢的。這一種體系是難以被改變的，亦 即是，this idea of the world is not open to transformation。那時候的人認知的世界就是當權者就是當權者而不太會受到任何的質疑／考驗；即使是改朝換代，人們所推翻的，並不是這一種對 世界及社會體系的認知，改變的也不是這一種體系的權力關係，而是權力轉手而已。

現代性（在理想的情況下）剛好相反，人對於 社會體系的權力關係總帶有善意的質疑，因此我們會透過很多不同的方法表達出這種意見，制度不再是能夠像傳統社會般沿用百年以上，而是被不斷的改造 (transform)，權力關係不再是如傳統般的只有上而下，弱勢者也可以有某種影響到在上者的力量（縱使是非常有限）。現代性的社會，是一種被 destabilize 但是又維持著某種 equilibrium 的社會。

因此如 Giddens 所說。 Modernity 所指涉的現代社會，"is a society.... lives in the future, rather than the past."　而傳統社會就剛好相反，是一個 live in the past 的社會，因為它必須透過那個過去來維持社會的體系穩定。

把這一種 modernity 的概念帶到香港，就會看到香港其實是如何 traditional 的一個社會體系。即使是帶著一點 modernity 的痕跡，但是整個氛圍還是傾向於傳統多於現代性。

因此，說香港是一個沒有現代性的現代社會，並不為過。關鍵在於我們如何了解何謂現代性。
